Mechanical detection of nuclear spin relaxation in a micron-size crystal
نویسنده
چکیده
A room temperature nuclear magnetic resonance force microscope (MRFM), fitted in a 1Tesla electromagnet, is used to measure the nuclear spin relaxation of H in a micron-size (70ng) crystal of ammonium sulfate. NMR sequences, combining both pulsed and continuous wave r.f. fields, have allowed us to measure mechanically T2 and T1, the transverse and longitudinal spin relaxation times. Because two spin species with different T1 values are measured in our 7μm thick crystal, magnetic resonance imaging of their spatial distribution inside the sample section are performed. To understand quantitatively the measured signal, we carefully study the influence of the spin-lattice relaxation and the non-adiabaticity of the c.w. sequence on the intensity and time dependence of the detected signal. Observation of zero-point quantum fluctuations of a single-molecule magnet through the relaxation of its nuclear spin bath.
A single-molecule magnet placed in a magnetic field perpendicular to its anisotropy axis can be truncated to an effective two-level system, with easily tunable energy splitting. The quantum coherence of the molecular spin is largely determined by the dynamics of the surrounding nuclear spin bath. Here we report the measurement of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1n in a single crysta...
متن کاملStrong spin-phonon coupling between a single-molecule magnet and a carbon nanotube nanoelectromechanical system.
Magnetic relaxation processes were first discussed for a crystal of paramagnetic transition ions. It was suggested that mechanical vibrations of the crystal lattice (phonons) modulate the crystal electric field of the magnetic ion, thus inducing a 'direct' relaxation between two different spin states. Direct relaxation has also been predicted for single-molecule magnets with a large spin and a ...
متن کاملSensitivity of force-detected NMR spectroscopy with resonator-induced polarization
In the low-temperature regime where the thermal polarization P is of order unity and spin-lattice relaxation is “frozen out,” resonator-induced relaxation can be used to polarize a nuclear-spin sample for optimal detection sensitivity. We characterize the potential of resonator-induced polarization for enhancing the sensitivity of nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy. The sensitivities of tw...
متن کاملOptically induced dynamic nuclear spin polarisation in diamond
The sensitivity of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) depends strongly on nuclear spin polarisation and, motivated by this observation, dynamical nuclear spin polarisation has recently been applied to enhance MRI protocols (Kurhanewicz, J., et al., Neoplasia 13, 81 (2011)). Nuclear spins associated with the C carbon isotope (nuclear spin I = 1/2) in diamond possess uniquely long spin lattice rela...
متن کاملMagnetic dipolar ordering and relaxation in the high-spin molecular cluster compound Mn6
Few examples of magnetic systems displaying a transition to pure dipolar magnetic order are known to date. As was recently shown, within the newly discovered class of single-molecule magnets, quite attractive examples of dipolar magnetism may be found. The molecular cluster spins and thus their dipolar interaction energy can be quite high, leading to reasonably accessible ordering temperatures ...
